New Car Review 2013 Kia Sorento

Yep, its a Kia.

Ill spare you all the roaring up in the rearview mirror analogies that seem so unavoidable when writing about Kias huge and so far unfailing strides from punch line to todays version of what Honda was in the 80s. Short version is this is now and so is the Kia Sorento. Its a right-sized crossover SUV, made in America for Americans and it hits the bulls-eye dead center.

Our week in the 2013 Sorento came not long after a week in a 2012 model. Both were front-drive EX models...one notch from the top of the line. Differences? The 2013 EX makes leather trim standard. The 12 had a 2.4 liter four-cylinder, the 13 had a 3.5 liter V6. Frankly, the four is smooth and powerful enough for most driving...and theres a significant fuel economy difference: The fours 22 city/32 highway drops to 20 city/26 highway with the V6. Not a big deal in town, but six fewer on the open road is a big drop.

Apart from more frequent $50 a tank fillups (at $3.45 a gallon) theres not much not to like. Plenty of room for people and their things, a relatively quiet and smooth ride, carlike handling and a raft of features. Opt for the EX model and in addition to the aforementioned leather, youll get a six-speed automatic transmission, independent front and rear suspension, 5-spoke hyper-finish alloy wheels, a full complement of airbags and active headrests, anti-lock brakes, traction control, electronic stability control, downhill brake and hill-start assist control, tire pressure monitoring, fog lamps, heated outside mirrors with turn signal indicators, privacy glass and a rear spoiler.

Inside, theres more: Dual-zone automatic climate control, power windows, locks and mirrors, UVO in-vehicle infotainment system with rear camera, USB, Bluetooth, SiriusXM, power drivers seat with lumbar support, push-button start, cruise control, automatic light control, a tilt and telescoping steering column and interior accent illumination.

Base price for all that: $27,950. Which, if you havent been keeping up with Kia, sounds like a lot for the brand, but isnt. And, in fact, is a bargain compared to direct competitors.

Our tester got loaded beyond the standard stuff, though: $2,000 for the Limited Package (navigation with Sirius Traffic), an air-cooled drivers seat, memory drivers seat and mirrors, power folding ourside mirrors and Homelink)...$3,400 for the Premium Package 2 (First Aid kit, Infinity surround sound audio system, heated front seats, power passenger seat, a 50/50 split folding third row seat, auto-dimming mirror and panoramic sunroof)...$65 for a rear bumper protector...$50 for a cargo net and $125 for a cargo cover.

Grand total, including $800 for freight and handling: $34,390. Again, your brain may have trouble putting the phrase "Thirty four thousand dollars" together with the name "Kia". But try loading a competitor to that level and see what the bottom line is. And theres Kias 10 year/100,000 mile limited powertrain warranty, 5 year/60,000 mile limited basic warranty and 5 years/60,000 miles of roadside assistance. Its a compelling package...and one you shouldnt ignore if youre shopping in this segment.

A truly great small car is a wonderful thing. For a long, long time, my vote for best ever went to the 1984 Honda Civic I bought brand new and kept for 14 years and 144,000 trouble-free miles.

But some time back, the old Civic got passed by a small car with all of its virtues (compact size, good interior space, fuel economy and a bigger dose of fun-to-drive than anything else in the class) and all the improvements more than a quarter-century can bring: The Mazda 3.

Weve driven and raved about Mazda 3s before. In fact, the 2008 Mazda 3 was one of the first TireKicker reviews, on our third day of existence.  And a little over a year and a half ago, we sampled the new-gen 2010. 

But a year and a half is a long time not to be driving and talking about one of the best buys in all autodom, so we arranged with Chapman Mazda in Phoenix to borrow a just-arrived 2012 Mazda 3 for a week.

This time, we drew the Mazda 3 S 5-Door Touring model. There are only two flavors of the Mazda 3 5-door...Touring and Grand Touring. The difference between the two cars? $1,570, which buys a power moonroof, dual-zone automatic climate control, leather-trimmed sport seats, heated front seats with 5 settings, an 8-way power drivers seat and a 6-CD, 10-speaker Bose Centerpoint Surround Sound system.

Which is one serious value for $1,570.

But sticking with the S is by no means roughing it. Both cars have the same 2.5 liter DOHC 4 with 167 horsepower that feels like a good 90 more. Both come standard with a 6-speed manual transmission and an EPA mileage estimate of 20 city/28 highway.

Ours had the 5-speed automatic, and in testament to how good the computer progamming behind modern automatics has become, the automatic gets better mileage than the stick...bumping up to 22 city/29 highway.

The automatic was the only option...putting the base price at $22,000 even, plus $795 delivery, processing and handling. So $22,795. For that  you get 4-wheel disc brakes, electronic power assisted rack and pinion steering, front and rear stabilizer bars, 17 inch alloy wheels, and the most fun youve had while driving in a long, long time.

Simply put (and weve said this before), Mazdas love to run. Theyre happy machines. The smiley face front ends are no coincidence. They handle like theyre on rails. They live up to the corporate motto "Always The Soul of a Sports Car".

Look at the instrument panel in the picture above. Everything simple, direct and right where your hand expects it to be. Not to mention tastefully designed and of very good materials and craftsmanship...way beyond what $22,000 normally buys.

UPDATE: If the five-door is so good, hows the 2012 Mazda 3 four-door?

Surprisingly good. Now, you may wonder why thered be a surprise when all thats different is the number of doors...but thats the thing...the Mazda 3 5-door and 4-door have three big differences beyond the roofline.

One, the Mazda 3 i Sport 4-door (also borrowed from Chapman Mazda in Phoenix)  packs a bit less power...148 horses instead of the 167 in the 5-door (you can get the hotter engine by stepping up to the S model four-door).

Two...that difference in power makes a significant difference in mileage: The EPA says the 4-door should get 24 city/33 highway as opposed to the 22/29 in the five-door (both those figures are for the automatic versions...the stick in the four-door bumps it up to 25/33).

And three...price. The Mazda 3 i Sport 4-door starts at $17,555 with the automatic transmission, $2,445 less than the 5-door tested above. Want one for even less? Go with the stick and the base price for the 4-door drops to $16,845.  And, if you live in a place where you can live without air conditioning and an outside temperature display, theres the Mazda 3 i SV 4-door at a mere $15,200.

Apart from those three things, everything we said about the 5-door goes for the 4-door. Its a truly terrific small sedan. Once again, we got one without options and the final cost (including delivery) was $18,350...making it the second lowest-priced (as tested) car weve driven this year. The lowest? The 3s baby brother...the Mazda 2.

Car assemblers recommend a different air pressure for front and rear tires. You should pay more attention to these recommendations than the number printed on the sidewall to determine your car TAB. Compare TAB cold with car assemblers recommendation. If different, then you should adjust them.

TAB Let cool 32 Psi, while the 35 psi recommendation automobile assemblers, mean 3 Psi to be added. If, TAB 34 Psi heat, then increase the tire pressure to 37 psi. Conversely, when the cold TAB higher than recommended minimum, the exhaust air pressure in accordance with the difference. This process also uses heat TAB benchmark. If the difference between cold and TAB recommendation is already known, for example 2 Psi, and Psi 38 TAB known heat, then reduce the TAB to the remaining 36 Psi

Obey Pattern Routine Maintenance

Most cars have been using the latest advanced technology such as electronic ignition which is simpler treatment. But still there are components that need attention, such as replacing air filters periodically.

Set the ignition timing back. Clean the spark plugs, ignition and ensure the functions work well. The existence of holes in muffler or exhaust pipe will waste fuel, noisy and smelly

Kia Soul Sport Review





Soul. Korea.

Not a typo. Not talking about Seoul, the capital city...but the latest import from Korea, the Kia Soul.

Number one question I got from people during the week I had it: "What IS it?"

Answer: A very roomy, reasonably powered and very fun car.

The exterior styling looks better (at least to me) in person than in pictures. The interior, I think, deserves an award. The designer, who came from Audi, found a way to distract from a low budget with inventive textures and colors. Its a mood elevator...and probably makes the Soul feel more fun than it actually is. But thats okay. Flip through enough car magazines and youll find automotive journalists busting very fast cars because they dont feel that fast. It works both ways.

$16,950 base. The tester had one option...a sunroof for $700. That and $695 freight gets us to $18,345. Thats $351 more than the Scion xB I tested (which didnt have a sunroof). And the Soul gets better gas mileage (EPA estimated 24 city/30 highway to the xBs 22/28).

As I noted in the xB review, this segments getting crowded...the Soul, xB, Honda Element and Nissan Cube all aiming for trendy young drivers....but I think Kia has the edge.

UPDATE: Did an additional week in the Kia Soul Exclaim (which is actually printed as just an exclamation point...as in "Kia Soul !"). Pretty much the same deal as the Kia Soul Sport, except the Sport gets a sport-tuned suspension which the ! doesnt, the ! gets body color front and rear bumpers while the Sport gets "Unique front and rear bumper fascias"...and the $700 optional power sunroof in the Sport is standard in the !. Either ones a strong candidate for the segment.

Replacing the spark in a car Mazda

2012 Ford Focus Review

At last, Ford lets us have the good stuff! For a decade or so, weve been hearing how the American Ford Focus compared unfavorably if at all to the European model...and with each update, weve been hoping to get what theyve had for so long.

Well, the 2012 Focus is here and now we can see what the shouting was all about. Not only is it a night-and-day difference from the previous U.S. Focus, its also a completely different approach to small cars from its chief rival, the new Chevrolet Cruze (review coming soon here).

The Focus rides, drives and handles like a German car that just happens to have the blue Ford oval attached to the front and back. The combination of the 2-liter four-cylinder engine and six-speed automatic transmission gives it strong acceleration and very good fuel economy (28 city/38 highway is the EPA estimate and our weeklong experience of mixed city street and freeway driving suggests thats realistic).

Ford has done some of its best work with the Focus interior...contemporary and techno without being overwrought like the Honda Civic (another direct competitor). The seats are comfortable for hours at a time, controls are well-placed an fall easily to hand. And, unlike the Fiesta, the back seat has adequate room for people just a shade under six feet tall.

The SEL 5-Door Hatchback is well equipped, with 16-inch alloy wheels, halogen headlamps, fog lamps, a rear spoiler, an AM/FM/CD/mp3 audio system, ambient lighting, power windows and locks, a leather wrapped steering wheel with audio and cruise controls, climate control, illuminated entry, AdvanceTrac with electronic stability control, SYNC, 4-wheel disc brakes with ABS, a rear wiper/washer, power locks, keyless entry and tire pressure monitoring system standard at $21,065. As with the Fiesta, its pricey for the class size historically, but both Ford and Chevy appear to be moving into the premium compact segment that the VW Jetta has abandoned this year (review coming soon on that, too).

Our tester added Rapid Spec package 301A (MyFord Touch audio/nav system with an upgraded Sony stereo, HD radio, Sirius and 10 speakers)for $995 and Red Candy Metallic Tinted paint for $395. Total price with destination charges: $23,180. Again, more than youd pay for a Civic or Corolla, but reasonable Jetta money when Jettas were premium German compacts.  And, based on precision and driving pleasure, Im willing to say the Focus is what the Jetta was...and maybe even more.


My only concern is quality control. While everything seems top-notch, our tester had a trim piece above the passenger front door window that kept coming loose and hanging down and once, the MyFord Touch system froze up completely and would do absolutely nothing...not even pushing the "off" button made a difference...until it decided it was time to re-boot itself...a total of 9 minutes. Could just be the one we had. But if Fords going to convince Americans to pay $23K (and more...theres a "Titanium" level above the SEL) for a compact car, quality had better be job one.

New Car Review 2013 Nissan Juke SL

About a year and a half ago, we did our first review of the Nissan Juke. Bottom line was it was a ball to drive and spacious for people, useful for their things.

But I could never get my brain wrapped around the styling.

Well, I still cant.

But a second week in a Juke...this one a six-speed manual as opposed to the Continuously Variable Transmission in the first car. And now I think I understand the Juke a lot more.



What we have here are the makings of a first-class rally car. That 16-valve turbocharged 1.6 liter four was surprisingly quick and responsive (with 188 horsepower and 177 pounds per foot of torque, not really a surprise) with the CVT, but the six-speed manual lets you maximize the power delivery.

You can call this a crossover...but the fact of the matter is, Nissan needs to start a rally team tomorrow and go hunting Subarus.

The cost of all this fun? Well, thats another plus for the Juke. Base is a nice, round $24,000. which gets you front wheel drive, power front and rear disc brakes, 17 inch alloy wheels, antilock brakes, vehicle dynamic control, electric brake force distribution, and tire pressure monitoring.

Inside, automatic air conditioning, a 6-way adjustable drivers seat (the front seats are leather-appointed and heated), a leather-wrapped steering wheel with cruise and audio controls, power door locks, a power sliding moonroof, push-button ignition, an AM/FM/CD/USB/SiriusXM Rockford Fosgate ecoPUNCH Premium Audio System, a 5-inch color touch-screen display with satnav and SiriusXM NavTraffic, a rear monitor and Bluetooth.

Let me repeat. Thats all standard for $24,000. And it flies when you punch it and the EPA says it gets 25 miles per gallon in the city and 31 on the highway.

Its getting hard to say no when I lay all the facts out like that. Our tester added three options (carpeted floor mats and cargo mat for $180, a center armrest for $245 and a Sport Package featuring a rear roof spoiler, 17-inch gunmetal alloy wheels and stainless steel exhaust finisher for $1,350.)...bringing the total with $780 in destination charges to $26,555.

I just continue to struggle with the styling, which, as I said in the first Juke review, reminds me of the Datsun F-10. But Ill tell you this...if the Juke were gorgeous, itd be one of my favorite cars. As it is, once behind the wheel, Ive got no complaints.
